How I found my calling at Divisions Maintenance Group

Austin Goolsby, DMG Account Executive

Coming out of college, I knew I wanted to go into sales.

First, I’m an extrovert, and I liked the idea of spending my days talking with people and building relationships.

Second, I’m competitive (extremely competitive), and sales is all about pushing yourself to do more and better.

Third — and this might sound odd I knew I would fail. In a sales role, you’re going to hear “no” a lot more than you hear “yes.” But I liked knowing I would fall down, learn from my mistakes and get up and try again.

I started with Divisions Maintenance Group in 2023 as a sales and operations intern. From there, I moved into a full-time operations coordinator position and then to my current role: Account Executive.

Account Executive is a big job. I’m responsible for hunting down new business for DMG, and once I get it, I’m responsible for running the operations side to maintain it. The goal is to grow my account to the point where I need to hire my own support staff.

My first days and weeks as an Account Executive were a blur. I was making 60 to 100 phone calls a day, digging into research and trying to find any connection I could to get a foot in the door with a prospect.

I was relentlessly persistent. And all I had to show for it was a pile of rejections.

And more rejections.

And more.

But then, I landed an account with a small property management company. It was my first win, and it felt amazing.

I got another win, and then another. Recently, I landed a larger customer in the food industry, and now DMG is providing services for each of their 240 facilities. It feels so good to know I’m bringing in revenue for DMG and at the same time providing quality service for each customer on my account.

Plus, a huge benefit of the Account Executive role is uncapped commission. It might take you a month, it might even take you a full year or two to really develop in this role. But there’s so much potential.

I feel lucky in a lot of ways. I was lucky, coming out of college, to know exactly what kind of job I wanted. I was lucky to find DMG. Then, I was lucky to land on a great team with supportive managers who gave me a chance and helped me grow.

About Austin

Austin Goolsby, DMG Account Executive

Title: Account Executive

Favorite part of the job: I really like talking to customers every day. I’ve created a lot of good relationships with the facility managers I work with on a daily basis. To hear their reaction when we solve a problem for them is awesome.

Favorite day at DMG: When my first larger account signed their contract and sent it over. That was one of the best moments I’ve had here.

Why DMG? Facility maintenance is not the first thing you think of, but this industry is up and coming, and DMG is at the top. This company will grow you, and you will be more successful after coming here.

Fun fact: I was a pole vaulter during college for the University of Cincinnati, and I’m still working to make the Olympic pole vault team. I’m about a foot shy of qualifying for the trials.
